PayPlan’s debt advice experts offer several free and paid-for training sessions to debt advice agencies, charities, creditors, employers and educational organisations.

Training courses are delivered by our partnership support colleagues in person at your organisation. Most of our courses can be delivered online.

Debt and Domestic Abuse

New for 2020, we’re proud to launch our Debt and Domestic Abuse training. This training course has been developed in conjunction with experts from the Broxtowe Women’s Project.

With the government presenting its landmark Domestic Abuse Bill in 2019, there has never been a better time to equip money advisers on how to recognise and assist domestic abuse cases.

Course outline:

  • Overview of statutory safeguards defined in the 2019 Domestic Abuse Bill
  • Defining the different types of Domestic and Economic Abuse
  • Spotting the signs that someone may be in an abusive situation
  • How to react to those signs and engage appropriately
  • How to deliver effective internal / external support interventions
  • Innovative methodologies including the ‘Power and Control Wheel’ and ‘The Golden Minute’
  • The links between financial difficulty and domestic abuse
  • Attendees can claim two IMA CPD points for attending the training

Financial Wellbeing training

This course can be delivered as Financial Wellbeing training in the workplace or in a school or college environment. 

Attendees will learn how to manage their monthly outgoings, use credit safely, understand the importance of saving and how to seek advice if their finances are a cause for concern.

Course outline:

  • Living within your means – budgeting, how to maximise income, expenditure reduction and understanding credit
  • Planning for life events – savings, pensions and protection products for different life stages
  • Access to key advice – debt advice, benefits / employment and support for addictions / vulnerabilities

Partner Referral Training

For new and existing partners, our partnership support team offers free sessions to educate colleagues on the services that PayPlan offers and how we can best work together to allow more people to access free debt advice.

This course can be tailored to your requirements. So, for our debt advice colleagues, this session includes an update on the debt advice landscape and will help to understand how we can work together to best support the person seeking debt advice.

  • Introduction into PayPlan / PayPlan update
  • Spotting the early signs of debt
  • How to refer a client
  • What the client can expect once they have been referred
  • Understanding the PayPlan client journey

Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVAs)

As a five or six year-long legally binding agreement, Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVAs) can often be met with hesitation around who they are suitable for and when they are best advice.

In this technical training session, you will learn when an IVA is a good outcome, the full process of setting up the arrangement and investigate common myths around this debt solution.

  • What is an IVA and how does it work?
  • How IVAs are approved and the role of the voting agents
  • IVA fees
  • How homes are dealt with in an IVA
  • Problems and solutions in IVA
  • Attendees can claim two IMA CPD points for attending the training

Vulnerable clients – spotting the signs

Vulnerabilities include a range of factors – from learning or physical disabilities to mental health, addictions or abuse – and they can be categorised as short or long-term.

No matter what the vulnerability, it’s important that advisers identify these signs promptly and know how to appropriately respond to and support people.

Course outline:

  • Is my client vulnerable? Gain practical skills to spot the signs of clients in vulnerable situations
  • The FCA definition of a vulnerable person and reference to CONC and legislation
  • How to deal with disclosures from vulnerable clients using conversational models: TEXAS, IDEA, BRUCE, BLAKE and REACH
  • Understand the difference between personal and sensitive data – the differences between the two and how to deal with the data appropriately
  • Attendees can claim two IMA CPD points for attending the training

    Debt Management Plan (DMP)

    Take a detailed look at the different types of DMP and what is required for a client to enter a plan. We cover the regulatory requirements and delve deeper into the reasons why people choose to enter into a DMP. 

    Course outline:

    • Identify people who may be suitable for a Debt Management Plan
    • Be able to advise clients fully on the process of a Debt Management Plan, from solution entry to exit 
    • Advise clients on the advantages and disadvantages of this solution over others that may be available 
    • Attendees can claim two IMA CPD points for attending the training
