Automated Debt Harrassment?

Following proposals from The Office of Communications (Ofcom), some companies may find themselves being fined heavily for using automated messaging services that ring debtors to prompt them to make payments, Credit Today has reported.

Ofcom said:

“Although there is no consensus, the effect of outbound call steering [the industry's name for this kind of automated technology] is likely to cause at least some people to suffer unnecessary annoyance and inconvenience. In consequence, Ofcom is minded to treat all outbound call steering as a form of misuse,”

Industry Reaction

The proposals have been put to the industry to allow them to respond, but they come as shock to those companies using this technology to manage their customers’ finances. Specialists in automated messaging services are currently forming a group response to Ofcom’s proposals.
